The story of Varadero Tourist City

Varadero was initially used as a dry dock in the 1500’s, it was in 1887 that ten wealthy families were granted permission to build their vacation homes in the region and thus the city of Varadero was born. In the 1800’s, the first tourists arrived and the city was known as an elite tourist resort for the wealthy. In the early to middle years of the 1900’s, millionaires began visiting the region and acquiring mansions along the peninsula. Visitors included Al Capone and Irénée du Pont, who built his estate in the 1930’s.

Between 1959 and the 1990’s, tourism took on an equalising role and the Cuban government converted the many mansions into museums in an attempt to incorporate tourism for visitors of all social classes. With the abundance of museums, hotels and tourist resorts, Varadero soon became an international tourist destination and is Cuba’s most popular tourist destination to date.
