The story of the Sierra del Escambray
The Escambray Mountain Range can be divided into two reserves. The Agabama River acts as a dividing point for the Western part of the range - known as the Guamuhaya Mountains and the eastern range which is known as the Sierra de Sancti Spiritus. Within the mountain ranges you will be spoilt for choice when looking for the gems of Mother Nature. The region proudly showcases enchanting caves, breath-taking waterfalls, flowing rivers, canyons and an abundance of fauna and flora species.
Having been declared a UNESCO Heritage Site the Escambray Mountain Range is known for the natural beauty that captivates visitors from all over the world, but the significance of the mountain range in the country’s history cannot be forgotten. These mountains served as the stage and battlefield for the War against the Bandits between 1960 and 1962 and were also the planned refuge during the Bay of Pigs Invasion but were never introduced for use as such.
